1. GRIMES "MY SISTER SAYS THE SADDEST THINGS"

let's start things off with a multi-talented Montreal-based artist i only stumbled upon last night {better late than never!}, her name is Grimes {Claire Boucher} et her music is totally hypnotic. it could be described as ethereal darkwave/bedroom pop with lashings of industrial noise, trance beats et r&b influences. Grimes' music would be perfect to see live at the Roadhouse bar in David Lynch's Twin Peaks.

i have been listening to her two albums "Geidi Primes" and "Halfaxa" repeatedly this new years day! i strongly urge you to check out Grimes' very unique musical stylings (if you haven't already) and get ready to be transported to another time and place ... her music sounds extra amazing through headphones, the multi-layered vocals et musical textures reverberate endlessly ... swimming et swirling around your brain to dizzying effect ...

one of the most interesting aspects of Grimes' music is how she often uses her voice abstractly, as instrumentation, rather than to simply address her audience with clearly defined messages, it is more the tone and feeling Grimes creates by layering and manipulating her voice melodically that allows her to fully achieve expression and meaning ...

my favourite track at the moment is from "Halfaxa" titled: My Sister Says the Saddest Things, the multi-layered vocals {some parts sound like Japanese}, sampled percussion loops et hard driving trance beats make it an incredibly catchy song, it continues to build to the hauntingly sublime denouement: "my only friend, this is the end" ...

if you like what you hear then you can grab Grimes' albums online from itunes or from Montréal indie label Arbutus records.

here is a great insightful documentary short Human Heart, about Claire Boucher aka Grimes directed by Emily Kai Bock. hopefully this is only the beginning, Boucher is a fascinating individual.
