8. LIA ICES "GROWN UNKNOWN"

i've been living with this track for a while now, letting it wash over me, it's the perfect track for a lazy Saturday. Grown Unknown is the promising title track from Brooklyn-based avant-pop singer/songwriter Lia Ices brand new album.

Grown Unknown is a beautifully crafted song, it utilizes simple, repetitive body-percussive rhythms, a melancholy Spanish-tinged guitar melody et finally a flourish of elegantly orchestrated strings that surge over us. there is a sparseness to the track that creates a strong sense of space, the guitar chords dizzily swirl et sway, growing louder et quieter, the vocals are distant, they echo sorrowfully, floating toward us, as if arriving from another time et place. there is also a sense or urgency et fragility in the song, that her voice might fade away at any moment, back into the void from where it emerged.

Ices voice is captivating et haunting, it is a timeless voice, existing in a similar realm as Cat Power, Feist et Bat for Lashes, but in her experimental, avant-garde inclinations she is reminiscent of French singer/songwriter Camille {her "Le Fil" album in particular}.
